How did/do people paint like this? Could it be that there was less distractions and they were allowed to go in a studio where they took as long as it took to get the paint the exact color they wanted? Could they perhaps spend hours painting an arm or a skirt? When I paint it’s like I can’t slow down. Of course there is the artist’s ability to really see the subject. My art teacher has this ability. She can see what mere mortals cannot. I’ll think I’m finished and time after time she sees where it needs more lights or darks, or the proportion is off.
I know! I've taken classes from my cousin, David Boyd, Jr. And he showed me how to use a grid to set my points in the painting. But I normally just grab a brush and go for it! If you look at his work, it has the same feeling of effortlessness. I conclude that the more you do the prep, the faster you can do it and get to the colors. Mine appear more contrived than his, even though mine are the ones without planning. Huh.
